Fishing and the Lure of Patience

Fishing Lures

My 8 year old son has become known as the “Fish Whisperer” for his uncanny ability to hook whatever fish (and size of fish) he sets his mind to. Recently I asked him if he would share his “secret to fishing”. He brought out his prized lures and explained the strategy behind the use of each one. He demonstrated patience, willpower, and the skills of preparation and observation. But the most interesting thing of all was his utter respect for his caught fish. On one occasion he brought great laughter from his sister and her friends when he kissed the head of a 15 lb Northern before carefully releasing it back into the waters. “Fish are very smart, Mums. If you know this then you can be a good fisherman”.

He has learned many valuable things from fishing which he can apply later in business. On my part his demonstration reminded me of the importance of having respect for your competitors, regardless of how badly they may smell.
